Biro Crown

Sandra recognised it. Wouldn't say from where. Jangle and swagger off a C90 that smells of a bedroom in 1995. Half the tracks fade out like they had somewhere to be.

Four names crossed out on the inlay card. A paper crown drawn where a band name would go. The tape turned up in the usual drawer, salt-swollen, between tides. We played it. The caff went quiet.

They never had a name. When Kelly filed the tape in the crate she wrote what she saw, in her own hand, on the divider: BIRO CROWN. Sandra maintains the crown's drawn in marker, not biro. Kelly runs the archive. Kelly's spelling stands. That's how bands get named round here — by whoever does the filing.

They never tour. They never post. They never explain. Somebody in this town knows who they are, and this town knows how to keep a secret.
